### 1. [Chemical basis for resistance in sweetpotato Ipomoea batatas to the sweetpotato weevil Cylas puncticollis](/content/papers/chemical-basis-for-resistance-in-sweetpotato-ipomoea-batatas-56yqtxe6gs/index.html)
**Authors:** Philip C. Stevenson, Harriet Muyinza, David Hall, Elaine A. Porter, Dudley I. Farman, Herbert Talwana, Robert O. M. Mwanga
**Published in:** [Pure and Applied Chemistry](/content/journals/pure-and-applied-chemistry-2moorla2/index.html) on 01 Jan 2009
**DOI:** [10.1351/PAC-CON-08-02-10](https://doi.org/10.1351/PAC-CON-08-02-10)
**Abstract:** The aim of this work was to determine the basis of resistance in a sub-Saharan sweetpotato variety, New Kawogo, to the African sweetpotato weevil Cylas puncticollis. Laboratory bioassays were designed to determine how the performance of weevils differed on susceptible and resistant roots. Liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) analysis identified quantitative and qualitative differences in the chemical profiles with higher levels of octadecyl and hexadecyl esters reported in the resistant variety.

### 2. [Unintended Pregnancies Observed With Combined Use of the Levonorgestrel Contraceptive Implant and Efavirenz-based Antiretroviral Therapy: A Three-Arm Pharmacokinetic Evaluation Over 48 Weeks](/content/papers/unintended-pregnancies-observed-with-combined-use-of-the-3a546adxql/index.html)
**Authors:** Kimberly K. Scarsi, Kristin M. Darin, Shadia Nakalema, David Back, Pauline Byakika-Kibwika, Laura Else, Sujan Dilly Penchala, Allan Buzibye, Susan E. Cohn, Concepta Merry, Mohammed Lamorde
**Published in:** [Clinical Infectious Diseases](/content/journals/clinical-infectious-diseases-nw7o67ln/index.html) on 15 Mar 2016
**DOI:** [10.1093/CID/CIV1001](https://doi.org/10.1093/CID/CIV1001)
**Abstract:** The integration of HIV care and family planning services is crucial for HIV-infected women. This study assesses the pharmacokinetic exposure of levonorgestrel released from a subdermal implant in HIV-infected women over 24 weeks, with secondary objectives to assess levonorgestrel, efavirenz, and nevirapine concentrations.

### 3. [Biomass fuel as a risk factor for esophageal squamous cell carcinoma: a systematic review and meta-analysis](/content/papers/biomass-fuel-as-a-risk-factor-for-esophageal-squamous-cell-2hezafpx7f/index.html)
**Authors:** Samson Okello, Suzan Joan Akello, Emmanuel Dwomoh, Emmanuel Byaruhanga, Christopher Kenneth Opio, Ruyang Zhang, Kathleen E. Corey, Winnie Muyindike, Ponsiano Ocama, David D. Christiani
**Published in:** [Environmental Health](/content/journals/environmental-health-1yrlk7cu/index.html) on 01 Jul 2019
**DOI:** [10.1186/S12940-019-0496-0](https://doi.org/10.1186/S12940-019-0496-0)
**Abstract:** This meta-analysis systematically reviews literature to determine whether cooking fuel type influences esophageal squamous cell carcinoma. Use of biomass fuel was associated with increased risk, with a pooled odds ratio of 3.02.

### 4. [Default Pathway of var2csa switching and translational repression in Plasmodium falciparum.](/content/papers/default-pathway-of-var2csa-switching-and-translational-34wwb24v59/index.html)
**Authors:** Bobo W. Mok, Ulf Ribacke, Niloofar Rasti, Fred Kironde, Qijun Chen, Mats Wahlgren
**Published in:** [PLOS ONE](/content/journals/plos-one-5sec6bof/index.html) on 23 Apr 2008
**DOI:** [10.1371/JOURNAL.PONE.0001982](https://doi.org/10.1371/JOURNAL.PONE.0001982)
**Abstract:** This work shows that var-genes switch to a common gene that is highly transcribed but sparsely translated into PfEMP1, demonstrating post-transcriptional mechanisms control their expression.

### 5. [Global Distribution of Human-Associated Fecal Genetic Markers in Reference Samples from Six Continents](/content/papers/global-distribution-of-human-associated-fecal-genetic-31mlo2xg9a/index.html)
**Authors:** René Mayer, Georg H. Reischer, Simone K. Ixenmaier, Alfred Paul Blaschke, and others
**Published in:** [Environmental Science & Technology](/content/journals/environmental-science-technology-nufr6xdf/index.html) on 23 Mar 2018
**DOI:** [10.1021/ACS.EST.7B04438](https://doi.org/10.1021/ACS.EST.7B04438)
**Abstract:** This study investigates the geographic distribution of five human-associated genetic markers in wastewater to assist in water quality monitoring and pollution risk assessment.
